COMMON SIGNS

Symptoms you may recognise.

If two or more of these apply to you, an assessment is a sensible next step.

Sharp, dull, or burning sensation across the lower back
Stiffness on waking
Or after prolonged sitting or standing
Radiating pain
Into the buttocks or legs — may indicate nerve involvement
Difficulty bending or twisting
Forward, backward, or rotating at the waist
Muscle spasms
Particularly with sudden movement or change of posture
Posture-dependent pain
Worse in certain positions, eases with movement
COMMON DRIVERS

Why it might be happening.

Back pain has many potential causes. Identifying the driver is central to effective management.
CAUSE 01

Posture & sedentary load

Prolonged sitting at a desk, poor workstation setup, and reduced physical activity place sustained load on the lumbar spine, contributing to muscle fatigue, joint stiffness, and pain over time.
CAUSE 02

Disc herniation

Intervertebral discs cushion the vertebrae. When a disc bulges or herniates, it can press on nearby nerves — causing localised back pain plus referred pain or tingling into the leg (a pattern often associated with sciatica).
CAUSE 03

Muscle & ligament strain

Sudden movements, heavy lifting with poor technique, or overexertion during sport or physical work can strain the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine — one of the most common acute back pain mechanisms.
CAUSE 04

Degenerative changes

With age, discs and joints of the spine can undergo wear-and-tear changes. These are common on imaging but don’t always correlate with pain — many people with degenerative findings experience little or no symptoms.

When to seek urgent care

Some symptoms warrant immediate medical attention rather than a physio assessment. Please see your GP or attend an emergency department if you experience:
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area
  • Sudden, severe weakness in one or both legs
  • Back pain following significant trauma (fall, car accident)
  • Pain with unexplained fever, weight loss, or night sweats
OUR APPROACH

How physiotherapy may help.

A three-stage approach — assess, treat, then build long-term resilience.
01

Assess

A thorough history and movement assessment to understand the nature, severity, and aggravating factors of your back pain.
  • Detailed pain history
  • Postural & movement screen
  • Functional testing
  • Red-flag screening
02

Treat

An evidence-based plan tailored to your presentation, often combining manual therapy with active rehabilitation.
  • Manual therapy techniques
  • Targeted exercise prescription
  • Postural & ergonomic advice
  • Dry needling (where indicated)
03

Manage

Progressive program to build the strength, mobility and resilience to manage your back well long term.
  • Home exercise program
  • Activity progression
  • Return-to-sport plan (where relevant)
  • Self-management education
RELATED CONDITIONS
Current evidence suggests that prolonged bed rest is generally not helpful for most types of back pain and may slow recovery. Staying gently active within your pain limits is usually recommended. Our physiotherapists can guide you on appropriate movement and activity levels for your specific presentation.
It is advisable to see a physiotherapist if your back pain persists beyond a few days, is worsening, or is affecting your ability to perform daily activities. If you experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in your legs, seek assessment promptly.
Our physiotherapists use a thorough assessment to understand the nature and extent of your back pain. Treatment may include manual therapy, targeted exercise prescription, postural education, and activity modification. We use an evidence-based approach and tailor treatment to your individual presentation and goals.
Recovery timelines vary depending on the severity, duration, and cause of your back pain. Your physiotherapist will discuss a realistic treatment plan with you following your initial assessment. Consistent engagement with your home exercise program is an important part of the recovery process.
