What is sports physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy practice focused on the assessment, treatment, and management of injuries and conditions related to physical activity and sport. It draws on evidence-based clinical frameworks to evaluate movement, identify contributing factors, and develop management strategies tailored to each individual’s physical demands and goals.

At Alpha Physio, our physiotherapists use a thorough assessment to understand the nature and extent of your condition. This includes reviewing your history, evaluating your movement patterns, assessing strength and flexibility, and considering how your activity load may be contributing to your presentation. Treatment may include hands-on manual therapy, exercise prescription, taping and bracing, and education.

Not just for elite athletes

Sports physio is relevant for anyone whose injury is linked to physical activity — a running-related knee complaint, a work-related shoulder strain aggravated by lifting, a netball ankle sprain.

Sports physiotherapy is relevant not only for competitive athletes but for anyone whose injury is linked to physical activity, whether that’s a weekend cyclist, a competitive football player, or someone who simply wants to stay active.

Who can benefit?

Sports physiotherapy may be suitable for people managing a range of activity-related musculoskeletal conditions. Common presentations include:

  • Knee pain related to running, jumping, or contact sport
  • Shoulder injuries including rotator cuff strains and impingement
  • Ankle sprains and instability following a roll or fall
  • Hamstring, quadriceps, and calf muscle strains
  • Tendon conditions including Achilles and patellar tendinopathy
  • Overuse injuries in recreational and competitive athletes
  • Post-fracture rehabilitation where clearance has been given

If you’re unsure whether sports physiotherapy is appropriate for your presentation, our physiotherapists can assess your condition and discuss what management approach may be most helpful.

What to expect

Your initial sports physiotherapy appointment focuses on understanding both your condition and what you’re trying to get back to. Our goal is to support your involvement in the activities you value — not to keep you in the clinic any longer than necessary.

  1. Detailed history — when it started, what activities it affects, what you’ve already tried.
  2. Physical assessment — observing movement, range of motion, strength, and relevant biomechanical factors.
  3. Management plan — hands-on treatment, a tailored exercise program, and activity modification where relevant.
  4. Progression & review — follow-ups progress your program and adjust the plan as your condition evolves.
