Work Cover & Physiotherapy
Have a work injury and need help to recover? This page will tell you how Alpha Physio can get you back on track, and how we can help you with rehabilitation.
What is WorkCover?
WorkCover is insurance taken out by your employer to cover medical expenses if you are injured at work. All employers must have WorkCover or similar insurance to cover their employees.
This means if you are injured at work you can receive physiotherapy and other medical care without having to worry about the cost of rehabilitation.
What Work Injuries Can Physiotherapy Help With?
Physiotherapy can help with most work injuries by reducing pain and speeding up recovery. Some examples of injuries physiotherapy can assist with include:
- Lower Back Injuries
- Disc Injuries
- Ligament and tendon injuries
- Fracture rehabilitation.
- Motor vehicle accidents and whiplash
- Tennis and golfer’ elbow
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Multi-Trauma
- Knee injuries (ligaments, meniscus)
- Hip Injuries (labral tears, bursitis)
- Shoulder Injuries (bursitis, rotator cuff)
- And much more!
How can I get a WorkCover Claim for my Injury?
First you will need to see a doctor (GP or specialist) to review your injury and provide you with a ‘work capacity certificate’. This lets your employer know if you are still able to work, and if so, what you can do safely.
Your doctor will also refer you to physiotherapy if it will help you recover from injury. Ask your doctor if you are not sure. You should also inform your employer of the injury as soon as possible so that your employer can put in the necessary paperwork for your claim.
If you have a work capacity certificate with a referral for physiotherapy, and you have spoken to your employer about putting in a claim, you can book in for physiotherapy!
What will physiotherapy do to help me recover from my Injury?
Physiotherapists are experts in rehabilitation and injury management. They will help explain your injury, the healing process and duration, and make sure that you make the quickest recovery possible.
In the early stages they can help with pain management by providing massage and other hands-on techniques, fit braces, provide heat and cryotherapy, and show you pain reducing exercises.
As you progress your physiotherapist will provide you with strength exercises to rebuild the weakened tissue and make the body robust against future injury. Strength exercises can be provided in the clinic, at home, or in a gym or pool see hydrotherapy.
In addition to this your physiotherapist will communicate with your doctor, your employer, and WorkCover to make sure you get the best care needed and the best outcome possible.
